Hey! Hope the week is treating you well so far ☺️
I posted on Tiktok to answer the question: what comes first, the music or the lyrics? And a friend messaged me, curious about when I started writing songs and who discovered I could sing.
Here’s what I told her.
How old were you when you started writing songs?
I was about nine. I wrote poems to start with, and even made my own little booklets of them. As I loved singing too, it wasn’t a huge leap to move from writing poems to writing lyrics. I’ve always loved playing around with words, the challenges of making them flow and rhyme. At that age, I didn’t have much life experience, so I mainly wrote about themes I heard on the radio. Things like lost love and strong friendships.
What came first, learning to play an instrument or discovering you could sing?
The singing, definitely. I sang all the time as a child, whether it was singing along to music or making up my own acapella songs. I’d sing everywhere. At home, at school, out and about. The main motivation I had for learning to play guitar was to back up my vocals.
Who encouraged or discovered your talent?
My music teacher at school really encouraged me to pursue singing. It might be hard to believe, but I was quite shy when I was young. I joined the school choir initially, and then took singing lessons and began performing solo. Singing alone was terrifying at first. I grew in confidence though, and would stay after school to practice on stage in the empty hall with friends.
While my parents aren’t musical themselves, they have always been big music fans. They’d always ensure I could attend my lessons and would come to watch my public performances.
Thank you, as always, and wishing you a wonderful week ahead!
